First, there was the book.
Then I started seeing red eyes everywhere.
Finally, I gave up and in just one evening this illustration was born. Here’s a scan of the final drawing, in case you’re interested:

New Love

People, I’m in love. My new beloved is smooth and shiny, it’s strong but very flexible. It’s called Speedball white calligraphy ink! It goes on my smooth rocks beautifully!!! I dug out a quill that I got when I was in… high school (don’t ask how long ago was that…) and thoroughly enjoy using it!

This is one of those things that I had floating in my head for a while and only now I got a chance to put it on paper. I wanted to draw a play on the word Treehouse in a way that it’s a House Tree, with tons of little details that make a House into a Home – cozy, cute, well-used and loved.

So, here’s a little “work-in-progress” snapshot for you. I’ll post the finished art as soon as it’s ready

Swirl Overload

I am having a total Swirly Tree overload here. They keep growing in my head, sneaking in behind my eyelids, begging to come out from under the tip of my pen. I’ve been letting them out little by little, so pretty much all horizontal surfaces in my house are littered with little scraps of paper covered with swirls, swooshes, branches, hearts, dots and squiggles. Fun, huh?

Allright, allright, perhaps the sketch itself is not all that pretty as the title suggests. But the intention is there. After glimpsing on the web some paparazzi shots of actors involved in the filming of upcoming movie Bel Ami based on Guy de Maupassant’s story, I found myself watching Moulin Rouge and drawing smoking courtesans…
Don’t be a very strict judge, it’s just a sketch, but I like it, so wanted to share:

Undisclosed Desires

This is sort of continuation of the Musical Drawings post and. I’m a huge Muse fan, never get tired of their music. The “favorites” keep shifting from one to another, but one of the most often listened to is probably the song called Undisclosed Desires. It’s kind of slow, seductive melody and words hinting to the dark and dirty secrets keep me captive. Totally unrelated, I’ve been following one lovely and utterly romantic Twilight fanfic called University of Edward Masen by SebastienRobichaud.
Somehow, these two combined in my head and resurfaced as a drawing influenced and inspired by both. It looks better “in person” (somehow I lost some sharpness in the process, so just imagine the whole thing crisp with lots of sharp details

Now, I feel like I need to explain a few things. The overall shape is… an anatomically correct heart. It (the Heart) as well as the Mask came directly from the lyrics:

The rest of the imagery came directly from the fanfic, which is a story of our beloved couple, meeting as a college professor and a student, although it turns out they already have an intriguing history together. The city in the top right corner is supposed to be Florence, Italy.

Aro Loves Happy Endings…

… They are so rare
And I love Aro! He’s cool, smart and intriguing. What started as an innocent question from a TwiMom customer, progressed through a Post-it Sketch, finally came to happy conclusion as a full blown Portrait of Aro. Here’s some “work-in-progress” for you:

Now, I feel like some explanation is in order, especially if you’re not a Twilight fan and don’t have a clue who Aro is and what’s all this stuff around him
Quoting Edward, “Volturi are the closest thing vampires have to royalty”. And in this royal family, Aro is the King. He can “hear” all the thoughts you’ve ever had just by touching your trembling hand. He “collects” the specially “talented” vampires for his Guard and ensures that the main rule of the Vampire world, keeping secrecy of it’s existence, is respected.
Aro, and other members of Volturi clan live in a little Italian town of Volterra. They reside in an ancient tower near the main town square and feed on unsuspecting tourists whom some members of the Guard bring right to their “table”, so to speak.
So, on my picture what you see is the Volturi Tower, and the back of Aro’s “throne” from the movie, which also looks like two towers with a marble disc in the middle. Aro’s eyes are “naturally” red, and his features are perfect. The mask is a wink to my beloved “Phantom of the Opera”, of course, but also to the masks worn by the townspeople celebrating riddance of Volterra from… vampires… by no other than “Saint” Marcus (the other prominent member of Volturi clan). On one side you can see the snake (which to me represents Aro’s politics and sneaky tactics) and on the other is a neverending staircase (for the long winding way Cullens and Bella were forced to take on their way to meet the Volturi). The brush and arrows tied with an intricate bow are also from the movie “thrones” and to me they look like representation of Volturi’s reputation as “Silent Patrons of the Arts”.
