Look Me in the Eye!
No, really! I mean it! Just look me straight in the eye, and tell me what you see… I can tell you right away, this is an eye of a slightly annoyed, tired woman, stuck at home on Halloween night with a sick and seriously cranky kid. That’s the truth of the matter. Normally, I like my own eyes. No wonder I’m so obsessed with the whole eye business (sheer quantity of “eye” tags in this blog and even it’s name is a good proof of the last statement). My eyes are a strange color, brown at first sight, but really more yellowish with a little green mixed in for good measure. Dark thick lashes (no complaints here). But as I said, shortage of beauty sleep and minor life aggravations don’t help in the glamor department. So… what’s a girl to do on a rainy crummy afternoon like that? But of course, play with makeup from my friend Rae of MixologyMakeup.Etsy.com!!
Rae is a really great person, full of ideas, fun and inspiring, ready to take on the world while generously helping others. Her and I got acquainted on the basis of the mutual infatuation with all things Twilight (what else?). But besides that, Rae’s makeup is a booming business with thousands of great reviews and features in the most exciting venues.
Now, in some ways, I’m the “wrong kind of girl” – I’m not overly concerned with my manicure and sometimes dressing comfortably is a much higher priority than dressing pretty. BUT, I am a girl after all, so looking good is important for me and I do use some makeup quite regularly, especially the kind that goes on and around the eye (here it is again, the eye obsession). Up till now, the only mineral makeup I’ve owned was a pharmacy bought foundation, which was nice, but nothing special. When I ordered MixologyMakeup Samplers on Etsy, I was truly hoping to understand what all the hype is about and have a good all “girly” time in the process.
The Sampler arrived quickly and carefully packed. When I opened the package, I got that notorious “kid in the candy store” feeling. Little pods filled with extremely fine powder in gorgeous rich colors… Really, what’s not to like?
I started with a dab of Natural Girl foundation (because that’s the kind of girl I am, naturally
) which blended in with my color beautifully, and made the skin feel even and smooth as silk. Seriously! Oh, I used the mascara for the more dramatic effect as well, but that’s besides the point.

Then I pulled out my trusty brush to try some colors on. I have to admit, I was a tiny bit apprehensive about using the makeup so fine and light (as opposed to pressed together into neat little boxes). It sticks to the brushes, but it is finicky and the wrong move can send the tiny flecks flying around and landing on all the wrong places. But I am sure it takes some getting used to and practice, just like any other art.
I put a line of rich, earthy brown with a bronze sparkle called Hooligan. I actually kinda like how it also fanned out onto my lashes

Then, I wanted to add some shine to this drab and boring day. I mean, hey, I want to sparkle and dazzle, at least artificially!
I used some seriously glittery Glitz powder on the corners of my eye, which by itself frankly looked like some fairy dust, but once on your skin, it just shimmers and glows.

Back to the under-brow area, I wanted to add some mystery to my “window to the soul”, so I picked the rusty brown Conundrum with unexpected emerald afterglow in it. I traced the crease in the eyelid with this dark shade for added depth. Then I blended it with some beige Hello Glow.Yes, it’s a bronzer, but honestly, my skin is so fair, that any kind of tan-colored powder just looks goofy on me, so I used it differently.

I do insist that my eyes have a hint of green in them (oh, just like Edward’s in his pre-vamped days
). So why not bring some of that greenness out with a little hint of Sour. The name probably comes from the apple (or at least the martini), but there’s nothing sour about it, the color is soft, warm with a slight sheen in it. What can I say, it completes the “look”, don’t you think?

Photographing makeup is hard. The colors will never look the same, even with the best of lighting, but at least I tried…
See the shimmer of Flitz? Subtle hues of Sour and earthiness of Conundrum? That’s what I’m talking about.
Rae’s makeup exceeded all of my expectations. I suppose once you go mineral, you never go back. It looks natural, yet colors are stunning, it’s fun and easy to apply (although it does take some practice). It certainly made my day and I’m sure once you give it a try, it will brighten yours as well

Currently, MixologyMakeup together with some other notable sponsors (TwiMom.etsy.com included, of course), are running a wonderful contest. It’s a Twilight Look-A-Like competition with a ton of exciting prizes and promotions. You read the Official Rules on Rae’s Blog, pick the character you’d like to try to impersonate with help of Mixology’s Twiology Collection, order a sampler kit for nominal price, get your picture taken wearing the makeup and submit it. I’m sure some costume and hair creativity will help as well to achieve better result
Good luck and have fun!
